That: Datt
Datt means that: Ech mengen, datt hie Recht huet (I think that he is right).
How It Works
Typical openers
- Ech mengen, datt ... (I think that ...)
- Ech weess, datt ... (I know that ...)
- Si seet, datt ... (She says that ...)
- Ech hoffen, datt ... (I hope that ...)
- Ech si frou, datt ... (I am glad that ...)
Word order
Datt – subject – other parts – conjugated verb. See the verb at the end of subordinate clauses.
Datt and dat
The conjunction is spelled datt, and dass is an accepted variant. Dat with one t is the article or pronoun: dat Buch, Dat ass gutt.
With du
Before du or de an s is added: Ech hunn héieren, datt s de geplënnert bass. See wann s de.
Without datt
After verbs such as soen and mengen, datt can be left out. Then the second clause keeps normal main-clause order, with the verb second: Ech mengen, hien huet Recht.
Fir datt
Fir datt means so that: Ech schwätze lues, fir datt jiddereen et versteet.
