Plurals With -er
d'Kand → d'Kanner, d'Haus → d'Haiser, de Mann → d'Männer. The -er ending has no n, so the n-rule never changes it.
How It Works
1. Neuter nouns
- d'Kand → d'Kanner (children), d'Haus → d'Haiser (houses), d'Buch → d'Bicher (books)
- d'Bild → d'Biller (pictures), d'Land → d'Länner (countries), d'Duerf → d'Dierfer (villages)
- d'Wuert → d'Wierder (words), d'Kleed → d'Kleeder (dresses), d'Bett → d'Better (beds)
2. Masculine nouns
- de Mann → d'Männer (men), den Dësch → d'Dëscher (tables), de Bësch → d'Bëscher (forests)
3. Changes inside the word
- a → ä: Mann → Männer, Land → Länner
- au → ai: Haus → Haiser
- u → i: Buch → Bicher
- ue → ie: Duerf → Dierfer, Wuert → Wierder
Words ending in -nd or -ld also change those letters to -nn- and -ll-: Kand → Kanner, Land → Länner, Bild → Biller.
4. Article and n-rule
The plural article is d', even for a masculine noun: de Mann → d'Männer. The -er ending does not end in n, so it looks the same before every word.
