tas pats / ta pati

The Same One

Level 4

Tas pats (masculine) and ta pati (feminine) mean the same one: tas pats žmogus (the same person), ta pati knyga (the same book). Both words agree with the noun.

How It Works

Main forms

  • Nominative: tas pats, ta pati; plural tie patys, tos pačios
  • Genitive: to paties, tos pačios
  • Dative: tam pačiam, tai pačiai
  • Accusative: tą patį, tą pačią
  • Instrumental: tuo pačiu, ta pačia
  • Locative: tame pačiame, toje pačioje

The first word declines like tas, ta; see This and That. The second declines like pats, pati; see Emphatic Pats.

In sentences

  • Tai ta pati knyga. (It is the same book.)
  • Gyvename tame pačiame name. (We live in the same building.)
  • Jis vėl vilki tą patį megztinį. (He is wearing the same sweater again.)

It is all the same to me
Man tas pats is a common answer when you do not mind which option is chosen: Arbatos ar kavos? – Man tas pats. (Tea or coffee? I do not mind.)

Same one or same kind?
Tas pats points to one and the same thing. To say two things are alike, use toks pat (the same kind): Turiu tokį pat telefoną kaip tu. (I have the same phone as you, the same model.)

Examples (6)

  1. Tai ta pati knyga.

    It is the same book.

Word by Word: That the same book.

  2. Gyvename tame pačiame name.

We live in the same building.

Word by Word: We-live in-that same house.

Both words are in the masculine locative to match name.

  3. Mes mokomės toje pačioje mokykloje.

We go to the same school.

Word by Word: We study in-that same school.

  4. Jis vėl vilki tą patį megztinį.

He is wearing the same sweater again.

Word by Word: He again wears that same sweater.

  5. Mums patinka tos pačios dainos.

    We like the same songs.

Word by Word: To-us please those same songs.

  6. Arbatos ar kavos? – Man tas pats.

Tea or coffee? I do not mind.

Word by Word: Of-tea or of-coffee? To-me that same.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing only the first word for case.

    Gyvename tame pats name.
    Gyvename tame pačiame name.

Both parts agree with the noun, so pats must also take the locative ending: pačiame.

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    Tai tas pats knyga.
    Tai ta pati knyga.

Knyga is feminine, so both words take feminine forms: ta pati.

  • Mixing masculine and feminine forms in the plural.

    Mums patinka tie pačios dainos.
    Mums patinka tos pačios dainos.

Dainos is feminine plural, so both words are feminine plural: tos pačios.
