The Historical Present

Level 6

Vakar einu gatve ir sutinku seną draugą. means Yesterday I am walking down the street and meet an old friend. The events are past despite the present forms.

How It Works

Storytelling. A speaker may switch to the present for a vivid sequence: Ateinu namo, o durys užrakintos. In an established past story this means I came home and found the door locked.

Historical accounts. A dated event can also be narrated in the present. The date, not the verb form alone, tells when it happened.

Keep forms ordinary. The verbs use normal present endings. This is a use of the present tense, not a new conjugation. A past-tense version is equally possible when the writer chooses a different narrative style.

Examples (4)

  1. Vakar einu gatve ir sutinku seną draugą.

Yesterday I am walking down the street and meet an old friend.

  2. Tą vakarą ateinu namo, o durys užrakintos.

That evening I come home, and the door is locked.

  3. Staiga jis atsistoja ir išeina.

Suddenly he gets up and leaves.

  4. Pernai atvykstu į Vilnių ir iškart pasiklystu.

Last year I arrive in Vilnius and immediately get lost.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a third-person present form for a first-person narrator.

    Vakar aš eina gatve.
    Vakar aš einu gatve.

The historical setting does not remove person agreement. With aš use einu.
