Superlative -iausias

Superlative Adjectives

Level 3

To say best or most beautiful, add -iausias (masculine) or -iausia (feminine) to the stem: geras → geriausias, graži → gražiausia.

How It Works

Building the form

Take the same stem as for the comparative and add -iausias or -iausia:

  • geras → geriausias, geriausia (best)
  • gražus → gražiausias, gražiausia (most beautiful)
  • brangus → brangiausias (most expensive)
  • šiltas → šilčiausias (warmest): t + i is written č
  • didelis → didžiausias (biggest): d + i is written dž, and the stem is the short did-

The same spelling change happens in kietas → kiečiausias (hardest) and saldus → saldžiausias (sweetest). See I as a Softness Marker and Comparative Adjectives.

Agreement

The superlative agrees with its noun like any adjective: didžiausias miestas, didžiausio miesto, didžiausiame mieste; gražiausia vieta, gražiausią vietą; plural geriausi draugai, geriausios dienos. See Adjective Agreement.

Best of what?

  • iš + genitive plural: Ieva jauniausia iš trijų seserų. (Ieva is the youngest of three sisters.)
  • the genitive of visi before it: visų geriausias (the best of all)
  • vienas + genitive plural for one of the: vienas gražiausių miestų (one of the most beautiful towns)

No word for the

English says the best. Lithuanian has no word for the, so the superlative stands alone: Tai geriausias restoranas mieste. (This is the best restaurant in town.) See No Words for A and The.

Common Mistakes

  • Using labiausiai with an adjective that has its own form.

    Tai labiausiai gražus miestas.
    Tai gražiausias miestas.

Ordinary adjectives build the superlative with -iausias. For this simple adjective, use gražiausias; labiausiai commonly compares participles and actions.

  • Writing t instead of č before -iausias.

    Šiandien šiltiausia metų diena.
    Šiandien šilčiausia metų diena.

Before the i of the ending, t is written č and d is written dž: šilčiausias, didžiausias.

  • Using the nominative after iš.

    Jis geriausias iš visi.
    Jis geriausias iš visų.

Iš always takes the genitive, so visi becomes visų.
