viso gero / iki
Saying Goodbye
Viso gero! is the everyday goodbye. Iki! is a casual bye for friends. Iki pasimatymo! means goodbye, until we meet again.
How It Works
Viso gero. This is a common everyday goodbye. It is a wish for all good things, so it fits a shop, an office and a friend alike. People also say Viso labo!, built on the same labas as the greetings, and Viso geriausio! (all the best), which sounds a little more familiar.
Iki. Iki! alone is a short, casual Bye! for friends and family. The word means until, and it takes the genitive after it, just like iki with the genitive:
- Iki pasimatymo! Goodbye! (until we meet again; polite)
- Iki rytojaus! See you tomorrow!
- Iki vakaro! See you tonight!
- Iki pirmadienio! See you on Monday!
Other goodbyes you will hear. Ate! is a very casual bye between friends. Sudie! is an old native goodbye that still suits everyone. Lik sveikas! (to a man) and Lik sveika! (to a woman) mean Take care! See sveikas, sveika, sveiki. At night, say Labanakt! (good night).
Choosing one. With people you call jūs, say Viso gero! or Iki pasimatymo! Iki! and Ate! are more informal.
