vis dėlto / vis tiek

Nevertheless and Anyway

Level 4

Vis dėlto means nevertheless or after all: Vis dėlto jis atėjo (He came after all). Vis tiek means anyway: Pavargau, bet vis tiek eisiu (I am tired, but I will go anyway). Both are always written as two words.

How It Works

1. Vis dėlto: after all, still. It sets the result against what was expected:

  • Vis dėlto jis atėjo. (He came after all.)
  • Buvo šalta, bet vis dėlto išėjome pasivaikščioti. (It was cold, but we still went for a walk.)
  • Vis dėlto tu buvai teisus. (You were right after all.)

2. Vis tiek: anyway. It says the action happens regardless: Žinau, kad sunku, bet vis tiek pabandysiu (I know it is hard, but I will try anyway). It often follows net jei: Net jei lis, vis tiek eisime.

3. Man vis tiek. With a person in the dative, vis tiek means it is all the same to me or I do not mind: Man vis tiek, kur valgysime (I don't mind where we eat). Man vis vien means the same. Vis dėlto cannot be used this way.

4. Spelling. The particle vis is always written apart: vis dėlto, vis tiek, vis vien. The particle combination with gi is joined: visgi, which means the same as vis dėlto.

5. Commas. Vis dėlto normally appears without a following comma, but commas are optional when it is given the tone of an aside: Vis dėlto jis atėjo. When it joins two clauses, a comma goes before it, often together with bet or o: ..., bet vis dėlto išėjome. Compare tačiau (however), which also contrasts two clauses.

Examples (6)

  1. Vis dėlto jis atėjo.

    He came after all.

Vis dėlto is written without a comma here. An optional comma can give it the tone of an aside.

  2. Buvo šalta, bet vis dėlto išėjome pasivaikščioti.

It was cold, but we still went for a walk.

  3. Žinau, kad sunku, bet vis tiek pabandysiu.

I know it is hard, but I will try anyway.

  4. Man vis tiek, kur valgysime.

I don't mind where we eat.

Word by Word: To-me all the same, where will-eat.

With a dative, vis tiek means it makes no difference.

  5. Vis dėlto tu buvai teisus.

    You were right after all.

  6. Jis mane įspėjo, bet aš vis tiek nuėjau.

He warned me, but I went anyway.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing the phrase as one word.

    Visdėlto jis atėjo.
    Vis dėlto jis atėjo.

Vis is always written apart: vis dėlto, vis tiek. Only visgi is written as one word.

  • Using vis dėlto to mean I don't mind.

    Man vis dėlto, kur valgysime.
    Man vis tiek, kur valgysime.

The intended meaning is "I don't mind where we eat". Only vis tiek (or vis vien) has this meaning with a dative.
