Commands: -kime

Let's with -kime

Level 3

Drop -ti and add -kime: eiti → Eikime namo! (Let's go home!), pradėti → Pradėkime! (Let's begin!).

How It Works

How to form it

  • eiti → eikime
  • važiuoti → važiuokime
  • pradėti → pradėkime
  • pabandyti → pabandykime (let's try)

Reflexive verbs
Without a prefix, add -kimės: mokytis → mokykimės. With a prefix, -si- sits after the prefix and the ending is plain -kime: pasikalbėti → pasikalbėkime, susitikti → susitikime. See Reflexive -si- After a Prefix.

Let's not
Add ne-: Nepamirškime! (Let's not forget!) See Negative Commands.

In everyday speech
The short form eikim is very common. People also use the short present einam or važiuojam as an invitation: Einam! (Come on, let's go!) See Short Plural Endings in Speech.

English let's is not leisti
Do not translate let's with the verb leisti (to allow). Leisk mums eiti asks one person for permission: allow us to go.

Examples (6)

  1. Eikime namo.

    Let's go home.

    Word by Word: Let's-go homeward.

  2. Pradėkime!

    Let's begin!

    Word by Word: Let's-begin!

  3. Važiuokime prie jūros.

    Let's go to the seaside.

Word by Word: Let's-drive to sea.

  4. Pasikalbėkime rytoj.

    Let's talk tomorrow.

    Word by Word: Let's-talk tomorrow.

Pasikalbėti has a prefix, so -si- stays inside and the ending is -kime.

  5. Mokykimės kartu!

    Let's study together!

    Word by Word: Let's-study together!

Mokytis is reflexive, so the ending is -kimės.

  6. Nepamirškime nupirkti duonos.

Let's not forget to buy bread.

Word by Word: Let's-not-forget to-buy bread.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the reflexive ending and changing the meaning.

    Mokykime kartu lietuvių kalbos!
    Mokykimės kartu lietuvių kalbos!

Mokykime is from mokyti and means let's teach. To say let's learn, use the reflexive mokykimės.

  • Translating let's with leisti.

    Leisk mums eiti namo.
    Eikime namo.

Leisk mums eiti means allow us to go. To suggest going together, use the -kime form.
