išskyrus + accusative
Except with Išskyrus
išskyrus + accusative = except: Visi atėjo, išskyrus Tomą. (Everyone came except Tomas.)
How It Works
1. The whole group and the exception.
- Visi atėjo, išskyrus Tomą. (Everyone came except Tomas.)
- Valgau viską, išskyrus grybus. (I eat everything except mushrooms.)
- Parduotuvė dirba kasdien, išskyrus sekmadienius. (The shop is open every day except Sundays.)
2. The accusative. Nouns and pronouns after išskyrus take the accusative: Tomą, grybus, mane, jį, juos.
3. Commas. The išskyrus phrase is set off with commas. In the middle of a sentence, it has a comma on each side: Visi, išskyrus mane, žinojo apie šventę. (Everyone except me knew about the party.)
4. At the start. An išskyrus phrase can also open the sentence: Išskyrus vieną klaidą, tavo darbas puikus. (Except for one mistake, your work is excellent.)
5. Not be. Be with the genitive means without, as in kava be cukraus (coffee without sugar): see without with be. Išskyrus clearly marks an exception to a group.
