kiek žinau

As Far as I Know

Level 5

Kiek žinau means as far as I know: Kiek žinau, jis dar nevedęs. (As far as I know, he is not married yet.) It limits the claim to your knowledge.

How It Works

Common phrases

  • kiek žinau: as far as I know
  • kiek prisimenu: as far as I remember
  • kiek suprantu: as far as I understand
  • kiek girdėjau: from what I have heard
  • kiek man žinoma: as far as I am aware (a little more formal)

Any person
The verb changes like any verb: kiek žinome (as far as we know), kiek jis prisimena (as far as he remembers).

Position
The phrase can come first, in the middle or at the end: Jis, kiek žinau, dar nevedęs. Jis dar nevedęs, kiek žinau.

No kad
The main statement follows directly. Do not add kad, as you would after žinau on its own: Žinau, kad jis nevedęs (I know that he is not married) but Kiek žinau, jis nevedęs (As far as I know, he is not married). See Content Clauses With Kad.

Other uses of kiek
The same word is also the question how many or how much: see How Many and How Much. To name someone else as the source, use anot: anot jo (according to him).

Common Mistakes

  • Translating as far as word for word.

Kaip toli žinau, jis dar nevedęs.
    Kiek žinau, jis dar nevedęs.

Kaip toli asks about physical distance. The Lithuanian phrase for as far as I know is kiek žinau.

  • Adding kad after kiek žinau.

Kiek žinau, kad jis dar nevedęs.
    Kiek žinau, jis dar nevedęs.

Kad follows žinau only when the sentence means I know that. After kiek žinau, the main statement follows directly.
