po + genitive
After with Po
Po with the genitive means after: po pamokų (after classes), po darbo (after work). With a length of time it means later or in: po savaitės (a week later, in a week).
How It Works
Forming it
- pamokos → po pamokų (after classes)
- darbas → po darbo (after work)
- pietūs → po pietų (after lunch, in the afternoon)
- savaitė → po savaitės (a week later)
- valanda → po valandos (an hour later, in an hour)
After an event
po koncerto (after the concert), po darbo (after work), po to (after that). Po pietų literally means after lunch and is the usual way to say in the afternoon.
After a length of time
Po + a period counts forward from a moment. About the future it means in: Grįšiu po savaitės. (I will be back in a week.) About the past it means later: Grįžau po savaitės. (I came back a week later.)
Po or per?
Per savaitę means within a week, at some point during it. Po savaitės means once a week has passed. See Through, Across and During With Per.
One word, three cases
- po + genitive: after, as here.
- po + instrumental: under, as in po stalu. See Under With Po.
- po + accusative: around or each, as in po miestą. See Around and Each With Po.
The ending after po tells you which meaning is meant.

Common Mistakes
Using the accusative after po to mean after.

Using the genitive after po to mean under.
Katė miega po stalo.Katė miega po stalu.Po stalo does not express the intended meaning under the table. Under takes the instrumental: po stalu.
Using per for in a week, when the intended meaning is once a week has passed.
Grįšiu per savaitę.Grįšiu po savaitės.Per savaitę means at some point within the week. To say you will be back when a week has passed, use po savaitės.
