juk
After All with Juk
Juk reminds the listener of something the speaker treats as known or easy to accept: Juk sakiau! (I told you so!), Juk šiandien sekmadienis (It is Sunday, after all). English says after all, you know or surely.
How It Works
1. Pointing to shared knowledge. Juk presents a fact as something the listener already knows:
- Juk šiandien sekmadienis. (It is Sunday, after all.)
- Tu juk žinai, kad aš tave myliu. (You know I love you.)
2. Backing up what you say. After advice or a feeling, a clause with juk presents a reason as clear or relevant: Pailsėk, juk visą dieną dirbai (Rest; you have been working all day, after all). Nesijaudink, juk viskas gerai (Don't worry, everything is fine). Compare nes, which simply states a reason, and mat, which explains something new.
3. I told you so. Juk sakiau! is the everyday way to say I told you so!
4. In questions. In a question, juk asks the listener to agree: Juk tu ateisi? (You are coming, aren't you?). For real surprise or doubt, use argi or nejaugi.
5. No commas. Juk is not an aside, so it is not separated by commas: Juk sakiau! Compare true parenthetical words such as žinoma (of course), which are; see Parenthetical Words.
