pārāk

Too: Pārāk

Level 3

Put pārāk right before the word it describes: pārāk dārgs (too expensive), pārāk vēlu (too late). It means more than you want, so it is not a stronger way to say ļoti (very).

How It Works

1. Before an adjective or adverb.

  • Šis dators ir pārāk dārgs. (This computer is too expensive.)
  • Tu brauc pārāk ātri! (You are going too fast!)
  • Tas ir pārāk grūti. (That is too difficult.)

2. Too much and too many. With daudz and maz, the noun is in the genitive: pārāk daudz sāls (too much salt), pārāk daudz cilvēku (too many people), pārāk maz laika (too little time).

3. Before a verb. Pārāk can also describe an action: Tu pārāk uztraucies (You worry too much).

4. Too ... to. Add a clause with lai and the conditional: Kafija ir pārāk karsta, lai to dzertu (The coffee is too hot to drink).

5. Par meaning too. The word par can also mean too before an adjective or adverb, and it is especially common in par daudz (too much), par maz (too little) and par vēlu (too late).

6. Too is not very. Pārāk always means more than is good. To praise something, use ļoti: Kūka ir ļoti garšīga! (The cake is very tasty!)

Examples (6)

  1. Šis dators ir pārāk dārgs.

    This computer is too expensive.

  2. Ir jau pārāk vēlu.

    It is already too late.

  3. Tu brauc pārāk ātri!

    You are going too fast!

  4. Zupā ir pārāk daudz sāls.

There is too much salt in the soup.

After daudz, the noun sāls is in the genitive, which has the same form here.

  5. Kafija ir pārāk karsta, lai to dzertu.

The coffee is too hot to drink.

  6. Man ir par maz laika.

    I have too little time.

Par maz means the same as pārāk maz.

Common Mistakes

  • Using pārāk to mean very.

    Šī kūka ir pārāk garšīga!
    Šī kūka ir ļoti garšīga!

The intended meaning is This cake is very tasty! Pārāk garšīga would mean it is tastier than it should be. Use ļoti for praise.

  • Using the nominative after pārāk daudz.

    Tur bija pārāk daudz cilvēki.
    Tur bija pārāk daudz cilvēku.

Daudz and maz take the genitive: cilvēki → cilvēku.
