ubi
Where
Ask where with ubi, and answer with in and a place.
How It Works
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ubi est Marcus? Where is Marcus? | Marcus in villa est. |
| Ubi sunt pueri? Where are the boys? | Pueri in via sunt. |
| Ubi est Roma? Where is Rome? | Roma in Italia est. |
Ubi sounds like OO-bee in both journeys.
A different word, quo, asks where to. You will meet it at Level 2 with the accusative.
Answer a ubi question with a place: in horto, in villa, in foro. In a statement, ubi can also mean when, which you meet at Level 3 with dum, postquam and cum.
Examples (4)
- Ubi est Iulia? Iulia in horto est.
Where is Iulia? Iulia is in the garden.
The question starts with ubi. The answer uses in and the ablative horto.
- Ubi sunt pueri? Pueri in via sunt.
Where are the boys? The boys are in the road.
Ubi goes with sunt when the subject is plural.
- Ubi est Roma? Roma in Italia est.
Where is Rome? Rome is in Italy.
Italia is a first declension noun, and in Italia is ablative.
- Ubi est Marcus? Marcus in foro est.
Where is Marcus? Marcus is in the forum.
Forum becomes foro in the ablative.
How It Connects
Learn This First
