quando, quomodo, quot

When, How, How Many

Level 2

Three question words, and none of them changes.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
quandowhenQuando venis? When are you coming?
quomodohowQuomodo vales? How are you?
quothow manyQuot libros habes? How many books do you have?

Quot works like a number word. It never changes, and the noun after it is plural. In Quot libros habes? the noun is libros, the accusative plural, because the books are what you have.

Quomodo is sometimes written as two words, quo modo. Quomodo vales? is another way to ask how someone is.

In both classical and Church Latin, qu sounds like kw, so quando sounds like KWAHN-do.

Examples (5)

  3. Quot libros habes?

How many books do you have?

  4. Quando missa est?

The question word comes first, then the subject missa and the verb est.

  5. Quot sunt evangelia? Quattuor sunt.

How many Gospels are there? There are four.

Quot asks the number, and the answer is a number word.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a singular noun after quot.

    Quot librum habes?
    Quot libros habes?

Quot asks how many, so the noun is plural. It is also the thing you have, so it is accusative: libros.
