Personal Pronouns: ego, tu, nos, vos

I, You, We, You All

Level 2

I, you, we, you all, and their object forms.

How It Works

PersonSubjectObject
Iegome
you (one)tute
wenosnos
you (several)vosvos

Ego te video includes both pronouns. Without ego, Te video says the same thing, and Video alone means I see.

Ego sounds like EH-goh in both journeys. Tu is TOO, and vos is WOHS in classical Latin and VOHS in Church Latin.

Prayers use the object forms often: Laudamus te (we praise you), Miserere nobis (have mercy on us, with the dative form).

Nos and vos look the same as subject and object. Ask who does the action to find out which job they are doing.

Examples (5)

  1. Ego te video.

    I see you.

Ego is the subject. Te is the object.

  2. Tu me audis.

    You hear me.

Tu is the subject. Me is the object.

  3. Nos vos videmus.

    We see you all.

Nos is the subject and vos is the object.

  4. Vos nos auditis.

    You all hear us.

Vos is the subject and nos is the object.

  5. Laudamus te.

    We praise you.

The verb ending says we, so nos is left out. Te is the object.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the subject pronoun where the object is needed.

    Ego tu video.
    Ego te video.

Tu is the subject. The one who is seen is the object, so the form is te.
