dativedomui or domodomibus
accusativedomumdomos or domus
ablativedomo or domudomibus
place formdomi

Learn the main forms first: domus, domus, domui, domum, domo. The second declension forms are just as common, especially domi and domo.

Three forms answer questions about place without a preposition: domi (at home), domum (home, as a goal) and domo (from home). Add a preposition when you mean the house itself: in domo is in the house, and in domum is into the house.

Examples (5)

  1. Marcus domi manet.

    Marcus stays at home.

Domi is the place form: no preposition is needed.

  2. Iulia domum it.

    Iulia goes home.

Domum answers where to, and again there is no preposition.

  3. Domo venio.

    I come from home.

Domo answers where from, with no preposition.

  4. In domum Domini ibimus.

We shall go into the house of the Lord.

From Psalm 121:1. Here in is used, because it means into the house itself.

  5. Domus mea domus orationis vocabitur.

My house shall be called a house of prayer.

From Matthew 21:13. Both domus are nominative.

Common Mistakes

  • Using in with the place form.

    Marcus in domi manet.
    Marcus domi manet.

Domi already means at home, so it takes no preposition. To say in the house, use the ablative: in domo.
