Because: quia, quod, quoniam

Level 3

Three words for because.

How It Works

WordMeaningExample
quiabecauseMarcus ridet quia Iulia cantat.
quodbecauseIulia gaudet quod Marcus in villa est.
quoniamsince, becauseQuoniam pluit, in villa manemus.

Quod has other jobs too. It is the word for which in donum quod video, and later it joins reported speech. The sentence shows which job it has.

To give a reason with a noun, use propter and the accusative: propter Iuliam, because of Iulia. To give a reason with a whole clause, use one of the three words.

In Church Latin quod and quia are also used after verbs of saying, where they mean that. That job is taught at Level 5.

Examples (5)

  1. Marcus ridet quia Iulia cantat.

    Marcus laughs because Iulia sings.

    Quia starts the reason.

  2. Iulia gaudet quod Marcus in villa est.

Iulia is glad because Marcus is in the house.

Quod gives the same kind of reason.

  3. Quoniam pluit, in villa manemus.

Since it is raining, we stay in the house.

    The quoniam clause comes first.

  4. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus.

For you alone are the Holy One.

From the Gloria. Quoniam gives the reason for the praise, and the verb is left out.

  5. Dominum laudamus quia bonus est.

We praise the Lord because he is good.

Quia gives the reason for the praise.

Common Mistakes

  • Using cur to mean because.

    Marcus ridet cur Iulia cantat.
    Marcus ridet quia Iulia cantat.

Cur asks why. To give the reason, use quia, quod or quoniam.

  • Using propter with a whole clause.

    Marcus ridet propter Iulia cantat.
    Marcus ridet quia Iulia cantat.

Propter takes a noun in the accusative, such as propter Iuliam. A reason with a verb needs quia.
