Truncation

Level 1

Troncamento (Truncation) is when a word is shortened by dropping its final unstressed vowel or syllable (e.g., buono becomes buon). It happens to make the language sound smoother.

How It Works

Truncation (troncamento) is the dropping of a final vowel or syllable to help the language flow smoothly. Unlike elision, it usually does not require an apostrophe.

1. The 'LuNaRe' Rule:
Truncation typically occurs when a word ends in an unstressed vowel preceded by l, n, or r (the consonant m is also possible but mostly found in literary texts).

2. The Diagnostic Test:
To tell if a word is truncated (and thus needs no apostrophe), check if the shortened form can stand before a word starting with a consonant. For example, buon is a truncation because we can say buon giorno; l' is elision because we cannot say l' libro.

3. Gender and Exceptions:
Truncation is almost always masculine (un uomo, nessun altro). A rare feminine exception is suor (suor Maria). Note that gran (from grande) is unique as it can be used for both genders: un gran film, una gran donna.

4. Common Categories:

  • Articles: uno becomes un (un cane).
  • Titles: Signore, dottore, professore become signor, dottor, professor before a name. Unlike adjectives, these titles are often truncated even before 's + consonant' (il dottor Rossi, il professor Speranza).
  • Adjectives: buono, grande, santo truncate frequently. Note that santo truncates to san before consonants (San Pietro) but uses elision (Sant') before vowels (Sant'Andrea).
  • Pronouns: quale becomes qual (qual è).

5. Fossilized Forms:
A few specific forms are written with an apostrophe to mark a missing syllable: un po' (poco), a mo' di (modo), and certain imperatives like va', da', fa', sta', di'.

Examples (5)

  1. Il dottor Rossi è un buon medico.

Doctor Rossi is a good doctor.

Word by Word: The doctor Rossi is a good doctor.

Both 'dottore' and 'buono' are truncated because they are followed by a name and a noun starting with a consonant.

  2. Non c'è nessun problema.

    There is no problem.

Word by Word: Not there is no problem.

'Nessuno' truncates to 'nessun' before a masculine noun starting with a consonant.

  3. Qual è il tuo numero di telefono?

    What is your phone number?

Word by Word: Which is the your number of telephone?

'Quale' truncates to 'qual' before 'è'. Note that there is NO apostrophe.

  4. Vorrei un po' di pane, per favore.

I would like a bit of bread, please.

Word by Word: I would like a bit of bread, for favor.

'Un po'' is a rare case of truncation (from 'poco') that requires an apostrophe.

  5. San Francesco è il patrono d'Italia.

Saint Francis is the patron saint of Italy.

Word by Word: Saint Francis is the patron of Italy.

'Santo' truncates to 'San' before masculine names starting with a consonant.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an apostrophe with 'qual è'.

    Qual'è il tuo nome?
    Qual è il tuo nome?

Because 'qual' is a truncation (it can exist before consonants like 'qual buon vento'), it never takes an apostrophe. This is a very common mistake even for native speakers.

  • Confusing masculine truncation with feminine elision.

    Un amica.
    Un'amica.

Truncation is almost exclusively masculine (un amico). For feminine nouns, 'una' undergoes elision (un'amica), which requires an apostrophe.

  • Truncating 'buono' before 's + consonant' or 'z'.

    Un buon studente.
    Un buono studente.

While titles like 'dottor' are flexible, adjectives like buono should not be truncated before 's impura' (s+consonant), z, gn, ps, or x.
