Passato Prossimo vs Imperfetto

Level 2

Use Passato Prossimo for 'what happened' (specific events) and Imperfetto for 'how things were' (background/habits).

How It Works

In Italian, choosing between these two tenses is essential for storytelling.

1. Passato Prossimo (The Foreground)
Use this for actions that are completed, have a specific beginning and end, or occur in a sequence. It moves the story forward.
Keywords: ieri, un'ora fa, improvvisamente, poi, quella volta.

  • Ho mangiato una mela. (I ate an apple — a finished event.)
  • Siamo andati al cinema tre volte. (We went to the cinema three times — a counted frequency.)

2. Imperfetto (The Background)
Use this to set the scene, describe physical or emotional states, weather, age, or habitual actions ('used to').
Keywords: sempre, spesso, di solito, mentre, da bambino.

  • Ero stanco. (I was tired — a state.)
  • Da bambino, giocavo sempre fuori. (As a child, I always used to play outside — a habit.)

3. Using Them Together
Often, the imperfetto provides the context while the passato prossimo provides the interruption.

  • Mentre guardavo la TV, è suonato il telefono. (While I was watching TV, the phone rang.)

Alternatively, if two actions are happening at the same time in the background, use the imperfetto for both:

  • Mentre io cucinavo, lui leggeva. (While I was cooking, he was reading.)

Examples (5)

  1. Ieri ho comprato un libro perché mi piaceva la copertina.

Yesterday I bought a book because I liked the cover.

Word by Word: Yesterday I have bought a book because to me it was pleasing the cover.

'Ho comprato' is the specific event (Passato Prossimo), while 'mi piaceva' describes a state/reason (Imperfetto).

  2. Mentre camminavo, ho visto un gatto nero.

While I was walking, I saw a black cat.

Word by Word: While I was walking, I have seen a cat black.

'Camminavo' is the ongoing background action, interrupted by the event 'ho visto'.

  3. Mentre io cucinavo, lui leggeva il giornale.

While I was cooking, he was reading the newspaper.

Word by Word: While I was cooking, he was reading the newspaper.

When two actions happen simultaneously in the past without interrupting each other, we use the imperfetto for both.

  4. Faceva molto caldo, quindi siamo andati al mare.

It was very hot, so we went to the sea.

Word by Word: It was making much heat, therefore we are gone to the sea.

'Faceva caldo' describes the weather (Imperfetto), 'siamo andati' is the specific action taken (Passato Prossimo).

  5. Da piccola leggevo molto, ma l'anno scorso ho letto solo due libri.

When I was little I used to read a lot, but last year I only read two books.

Word by Word: From little I was reading much, but the year last I have read only two books.

'Leggevo' is a childhood habit; 'ho letto' is a specific, counted result in a finished time period.

Common Mistakes

  • Using Imperfetto for long actions just because they lasted a long time.

Vivevo in Italia per dieci anni.
Ho vissuto in Italia per dieci anni.

Even if an action lasted a long time, if you define the duration (e.g., 'for ten years'), it is viewed as a completed block and requires Passato Prossimo.

  • Using 'sapevo' for finding something out.

    Different MeaningIeri sapevo la notizia.
    Ieri ho saputo la notizia.

'Ieri sapevo la notizia' is correct, but it means you already knew the news yesterday. To say you found it out, use the passato prossimo: 'ho saputo'.

  • Using Imperfetto for a specific number of repetitions.

Andavo a Roma tre volte l'anno scorso.
Sono andato a Roma tre volte l'anno scorso.

If you specify exactly how many times something happened (three times), it is a series of completed events, not a vague habit.
