Reduced Be- Allomorph

Level 2

The ber- prefix appears as be- before initial r and in established words such as bekerja and beternak, whose first syllable contains schwa plus r. Learn the attested form of each verb.

How It Works

The be- allomorph is illustrated by the first two patterns below; the third item introduces the distinct bel- variant:

  • Roots starting with 'r': When a root word begins with the letter 'r', the 'r' from the prefix is dropped.
Example: ber- + renang (to swim) → berenang.
  • Roots with 'er' in the first syllable: Established words such as bekerja and beternak use be- before a first syllable with schwa followed by r. This concerns that sound sequence, not every written e or every r anywhere in a root.
Example: ber- + kerja (to work) → bekerja; ber- + ternak (to farm/breed) → beternak.
  • The bel- form belajar: The root ajar (teach/learn) uses a special variant bel-, resulting in belajar. Bel- is a distinct variant, not another spelling of be-. TBBI also lists belunjur, beleter, and belagu.

While these forms look different, they carry the same meanings as ber-: performing an action, possessing something, or wearing an item.

Examples (5)

  1. Ayah saya bekerja di kantor pusat.

My father works at the head office.

Word by Word: Father my work at office center.

The root 'kerja' has 'er' in the first syllable, so 'ber-' becomes 'be-'.

  2. Mereka berenang di pantai setiap pagi.

They swim at the beach every morning.

Word by Word: They swim at beach every morning.

The root 'renang' starts with 'r', so the prefix 'r' is dropped to avoid 'berrenang'.

  3. Adik sedang belajar bahasa Indonesia.

    Little sibling is studying Indonesian.

Word by Word: Little-sibling [progressive] study language Indonesia.

'Belajar' is a unique irregular form of 'ber-' + 'ajar'.

  4. Petani itu beternak ayam di desa.

That farmer raises chickens in the village.

Word by Word: Farmer that raise-livestock chicken in village.

The root 'ternak' contains 'er' in the first syllable, triggering the 'be-' allomorph.

  5. Kami berangkat beserta rombongan lain.

We departed along with the other group.

Word by Word: We depart along-with group other.

The root 'serta' has 'er' in the first syllable, so it becomes 'beserta'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the full 'ber-' prefix with roots starting with 'r'.

    Saya suka berrenang.
    Saya suka berenang.

Indonesian avoids double 'r' sounds at the start of words. Always drop the prefix 'r' when the root starts with 'r'.

  • Forgetting the reduction in words with 'er' syllables.

    Dia berkerja keras.
    Dia bekerja keras.

Because 'kerja' has 'er' in the first syllable, the prefix must be 'be-', not 'ber-'.

  • Treating 'belajar' as a regular 'ber-' verb.

    Saya mau berajar.
    Saya mau belajar.

'Belajar' is an irregular form that uses 'bel-' instead of 'ber-'. It is one of the most common verbs in the language.

Learn This First

To understand the be- allomorph, you must first be familiar with the standard ber- prefix used for basic activity verbs. The be- form is a specific exception or reduction that occurs with certain roots (like 'kerja' becoming 'bekerja' instead of 'berkerja'), so knowing the base prefix is essential before learning its irregular variations.
