Just Now with Baru Saja

Level 3

Baru saja often precedes a predicate to mean just or only recently. Recency is relative to context, not a fixed number of seconds or minutes. Before akan, it can describe an action about to happen.

How It Works

Baru saja combines baru with saja and often presents an event as recent.

1. Position and Reference Time
The basic model places it before the predicate: Saya baru saja makan. TBBI also gives Waktu kami datang, dia baru saja pergi: the departure is recent relative to our arrival, not necessarily to the present. The verb keeps its ordinary form.

2. Register
Baru saja is standard and also occurs in conversation. Baru aja and barusan are common conversational choices.

3. Recency and Other Markers
Sudah marks already holding; baru saja draws attention to recency. The relevant interval depends on the event and context. The retained example Buku ini baru saja diterbitkan bulan ini concerns a publication this month, so the meaning is not restricted to seconds or minutes. Tadi generally locates something earlier; it does not supply the same recency emphasis.

4. Passive and Prospective Uses
It can precede a passive verb: Surat itu baru saja dikirim. In Saya baru saja akan meneleponmu ketika kamu datang, akan makes the call prospective: I was just about to call. The call is not asserted to have happened.

Scope and a Clear Model
Keep baru saja together in the basic recency model Saya baru saja makan. Moving saja in Saya baru makan saja changes its scope and can receive other contextual readings; do not teach a single automatic translation for every reordered form. Saya baru saja mandi is a concise recency statement without an added sudah. Avoid inferring a universal ban on all combinations of temporal markers from that editing preference.

Examples (5)

  1. Kereta api itu baru saja berangkat dari stasiun.

The train just now departed from the station.

Word by Word: Train that just now depart from station.

Baru saja places the departure shortly before the relevant reference time. The sentence does not say when the speaker noticed it.

  2. Maaf, Ibu Susi baru saja keluar untuk makan siang.

Sorry, Mrs. Susi just went out for lunch.

Word by Word: Sorry, Mrs. Susi just now go-out for eat lunch.

This explains that Ibu Susi went out recently. Politeness also comes from Maaf and the form of address, not from baru saja alone.

  3. Saya baru saja akan meneleponmu ketika kamu datang.

I was just about to call you when you arrived.

Word by Word: I just now will call-you when you come.

Akan places the call after the reference point: the speaker was about to call when the listener arrived. This is not a completed-call reading.

  4. Buku ini baru saja diterbitkan bulan ini.

This book was just published this month.

Word by Word: Book this just now be-published month this.

The passive diterbitkan presents publication as recent within the current month. Context supplies the scale of recency.

  5. Mereka baru saja sampai di rumah.

    They just arrived at home.

Word by Word: They just now arrive at house.

A simple example of the immediate past with an intransitive verb.
