silakan + Verb

Invitations and Permission with Silakan

Level 1

Silakan + Verb is the standard way to say "Please go ahead" or "You are welcome to..." in Indonesian. It is used for invitations and giving permission.

How It Works

The word silakan is a cornerstone of Indonesian etiquette (sopan santun). It is used in two main scenarios:

  • Invitation: Encouraging a guest or friend to enjoy something (e.g., "Please eat").
  • Permission: Telling someone they are allowed to proceed with an action (e.g., "Please come in").

Grammar Rules:
1. Prefix Dropping: When using active transitive verbs, the meN- prefix is often dropped in direct imperatives. For example, membaca (to read) becomes silakan baca. However, intransitive verbs, such as those with the ber- prefix, retain their prefix (e.g., silakan berdiri). Retaining meN- is also standard in a polite invitation: the official grammar gives Silakan mengisi formulir ini (Please fill in this form).
2. Passive Form: In formal or service-oriented contexts, silakan is frequently followed by a passive verb to sound more polite and indirect, such as silakan dinikmati (please enjoy [it]).
3. Suffix Retention: Suffixes like -kan or -i are kept to maintain the verb's specific meaning.
4. Formal Variant: In public speaking or formal events, you will often hear dipersilakan (e.g., Bapak Budi dipersilakan), which is a highly formal way to invite someone to speak or act.
5. Spelling: Always spell it silakan. The common spelling "silahkan" (with an 'h') is considered non-standard (tidak baku) by the KBBI (Indonesian Dictionary).

Examples (5)

  1. Silakan duduk, Pak.

    Please have a seat, Sir.

Word by Word: Please sit, Sir.

A standard polite invitation for a guest to sit down.

  2. Silakan masuk.

    Please come in.

    Word by Word: Please enter.

Used to welcome someone into a room or house.

  3. Kalau mau bertanya, silakan.

If you want to ask a question, please go ahead.

Word by Word: If want ask, please.

Here, silakan is used to grant permission to the listener.

  4. Silakan cicipi makanan ini.

    Please taste this food.

Word by Word: Please taste food this.

Note that the suffix -i is retained while the prefix me- is dropped from 'mencicipi'.

  5. Silakan ambil apa saja.

    Please take anything.

Word by Word: Please take what only.

An invitation for the listener to help themselves to something.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an invitation when you intend a straightforward request for assistance.

    Silakan bantu saya.
    Tolong bantu saya.

Tolong bantu saya directly asks for help. Silakan bantu saya can invite someone to proceed with helping, if that fits the context. Prefer tolong for an ordinary request; do not treat silakan as ungrammatical whenever the speaker also benefits.

  • Spelling the word with an extra 'h'.

    Silahkan masuk.
    Silakan masuk.

While 'silahkan' is frequently seen in public, the only correct dictionary spelling is 'silakan'.
