membantu + Verb

Helping Construction

Level 4

The verb membantu (to help) can be followed directly by another verb or by a person (object) and then a verb. The linker untuk is optional and often omitted in natural speech.

How It Works

The helping construction in Indonesian is centered around the verb membantu. It is highly versatile and appears in both formal and informal contexts.

1. Basic Structure
The most common way to use this is Subject + membantu + (Object) + Verb.
Example: Dia membantu saya belajar. (He helps me study).

2. The Role of 'Untuk'
English help permits both help improve and help to improve. In this Indonesian construction, untuk is optional. It can make the relationship explicit. Omitting it is also standard; the presence of untuk does not by itself determine formality or naturalness.

3. Verb Morphology
In formal writing, transitive secondary verbs (those that take an object) usually retain their meN- prefix (e.g., membantu menulis surat). Intransitive verbs or those with specific prefixes like belajar follow their own standard forms. In casual conversation, speakers often drop the prefix.

4. Passive Form
This construction is frequently used in the passive voice using the di- prefix. For example: Saya dibantu dia mengerjakan tugas (I was helped by him to do the task).

5. Membantu vs. Menolong
Membantu and menolong overlap in assistance. Menolong commonly describes rescue, while membantu emphasizes providing help or contributing. Membantu is not banned from emergencies or life-threatening contexts: one can help a person or assist a rescue. Choose the verb for the actual action rather than classifying situations as grammatically forbidden.

Help Versus Please: Bantu buka pintu is a possible request to help open the door. Tolong buka pintu asks the listener to open it. The first is not an incorrect version of the second: bantu retains the meaning help, while tolong can function as a polite request marker.

Examples (4)

  1. Saya membantu ibu memasak di dapur.

I help my mother cook in the kitchen.

Word by Word: I help mother cook in kitchen.

A standard everyday sentence where the person being helped (ibu) comes immediately after 'membantu'.

  2. Olahraga membantu meningkatkan kualitas tidur.

    Exercise helps improve sleep quality.

Word by Word: Exercise help improve quality sleep.

Here, 'membantu' is followed directly by the secondary verb 'meningkatkan' without a person in between.

  3. Guru itu membantu siswa untuk memahami pelajaran.

The teacher helped the students to understand the lesson.

Word by Word: Teacher that help student for understand lesson.

This example uses 'untuk' to explicitly link the help to the purpose, which is common in educational or formal contexts.

  4. Buku ini membantu saya belajar bahasa Indonesia.

This book helps me learn Indonesian.

Word by Word: Book this help me learn language Indonesia.

A common usage where an inanimate object (the book) is the subject that provides the help.

Common Mistakes

  • Incorrect word order when a person is involved.

    Saya membantu memasak ibu.
    Saya membantu ibu memasak.

To mean helping Mother cook, put ibu after membantu and before memasak. Saya membantu memasak ibu instead makes ibu look like the object of cooking; the word order changes the roles.

  • Using 'ke' instead of 'untuk' or a bare verb.

    Saya membantu dia ke belajar.
    Saya membantu dia belajar.

The direct complement is membantu dia belajar, or use untuk where appropriate. Ke does not introduce belajar in this model. Ke has directional and other uses elsewhere, so this is not a rule that it only ever describes physical movement.

Learn This First

To understand the 'membantu + verb' construction, learners need to be familiar with how active verbs are formed using the meN- prefix (specifically the 'mem-' allomorph for the root 'bantu'). Additionally, since this construction can optionally use 'untuk' to introduce the secondary action, understanding 'untuk' as a purpose marker is important. Finally, a grasp of basic sentence structure is required to correctly place the subject and the verbal object.
