Reading Longer Construct Chains
A construct chain can contain more than two nouns, as in מנהל בית הספר. The first noun is the head of the whole phrase.
How It Works
Start With the Head
In מנהל מחלקת הפיתוח, מנהל is the head and מחלקת הפיתוח is the department being managed. In תוכנית פיתוח השכונה, תוכנית is the plan and פיתוח השכונה names the neighborhood’s development.
Forms and Definiteness
Each noun occupying a construct position takes its actual construct form. In a standard article-marked chain such as מנהל בית הספר, the final article-marked noun gives the chain its definiteness; do not place ה mechanically on every noun.
Clarity
Long chains can make relationships and adjective attachment hard to follow. A של phrase or an explicit clause can make the intended relation clearer. The chain’s form does not always resolve who acts on whom or which nested noun an adjective describes.
