אין ... אלא can exclude alternatives while retaining the item after אלא. It does not deny that this remaining item exists.

How It Works

The Remaining Item

אין לי אלא בקשה אחת means I have only one request. The request remains part of what is affirmed. אין זו אלא התחלה characterizes the situation as merely a beginning.

Read אין Together With אלא

אין כאן ספרים says there are no books here. אין כאן אלא ספרים instead says that the relevant things here are only books. The restriction comes from the complete אין ... אלא construction.

A Restricted Characterization

אין בדברים אלה אלא הצעה limits what the words amount to: merely a suggestion. In these constructions, אלא contributes an only or nothing-but meaning.
