How It Works

Purpose With an Infinitive

על מנת ללמוד means in order to learn. יצאנו מוקדם על מנת להגיע בזמן gives timely arrival as the group’s purpose for leaving early.

Purpose With a Clause

על מנת ש־ introduces a clause that can name its own subject. In דיברתי לאט על מנת שדנה תבין, the speaker talks slowly and Dana is the person intended to understand. Attach ש to the first word of that clause.

A Negative Goal

בדקנו שוב על מנת שלא נטעה states the aim of avoiding a mistake. The word לא belongs to the goal clause. The expression על מנת ש־ belongs to a higher register than כדי ש־.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a separately stated purpose subject directly after על מנת.

    דיברתי לאט על מנת דנה תבין.
    דיברתי לאט על מנת שדנה תבין.

    Use the clause connector ש before the complete goal clause.
