Final Letter Shapes
כ, מ, נ, פ and צ normally become ך, ם, ן, ף and ץ at the end of a word.
How It Works
Match the Five Pairs
Learn כ–ך, מ–ם, נ–ן, פ–ף and צ–ץ. Use the ordinary shape inside a word and the final shape at its end. Compare מלך with מלכים: ך becomes כ when the plural ending follows it.
Same Letter, Same Sound
A final shape changes how the letter looks, not how it sounds. In native Hebrew words, final ך sounds like kh and final ף sounds like f. Some borrowed words that end in a p sound keep the ordinary פ, as in ג'יפ (jeep). Learn such words as they are spelled.
Check After Adding an Ending
Final shapes stay final before a comma or full stop. When an ending is added, the letter is no longer last, so it goes back to its ordinary shape: גן becomes גנים.
Examples (5)
- מלך / מלכים
King / kings.
The final ך changes to כ before the plural ending.
- יום / ימים
Day / days.
ם is the final form of מ; the word also changes its vowels in the plural.
- גן / גנים

ן becomes נ when ים follows.
- עץ / עצים
Tree / trees.
ץ and צ are two shapes of the same letter.
- חוף / חופים

ף becomes פ inside the plural. Both shapes of the letter sound the same in this word.
