Contrasting Claims and Referents

לעומת זאת means in contrast or on the other hand before a new statement. בניגוד ל means unlike or contrary to before a noun phrase.

How It Works

A New Contrastive Statement

לעומת זאת connects the new sentence to a relevant earlier fact. The contrast must come from the ideas themselves; the phrase does not negate every part of the previous statement.

A Comparison or Expectation

בניגוד לתוכנית means contrary to the plan. בניגוד לדנה means unlike Dana. The ל attaches to its noun or name, and a personal reference can use בניגוד לו or בניגוד לה.

Different Logical Jobs

לכן introduces a result rather than a contrast. אף על פי ש introduces a concession clause. Choose the expression that makes the relationship between the actual facts clear, and do not treat a noun comparison phrase as a complete subordinate clause.

    The comparison phrase names the contrasted person.

  4. הספר קצר. לעומת זאת, הסרט ארוך.

    The book is short. In contrast, the film is long.

    The second complete statement supplies the contrast.
