innerhalb/außerhalb

Within/Outside (Genitive)

Level 3

Innerhalb (within) and außerhalb (outside of) are prepositions used to describe boundaries in space and time. They usually require the genitive case.

How It Works

1. Spatial Usage
When describing location, these prepositions indicate if something is inside or outside a specific area.

  • Innerhalb des Hauses (Inside the house)
  • Außerhalb der Stadt (Outside the city)

2. Temporal Usage
In a time context, innerhalb emphasizes a deadline or duration. Note the difference: in einer Woche means 'at the end of a one-week period from now,' while innerhalb einer Woche means 'at some point before the week ends.'

3. Case Requirements
Standard German requires the genitive case. This means masculine and neuter nouns get the -s or -es ending.

  • Masculine/Neuter: innerhalb des Jahres
  • Feminine/Plural: außerhalb der Öffnungszeiten

4. The Dative Exception
If the genitive isn't 'visible' (common with plural nouns without articles), the dative case is used instead: innerhalb fünf Tagen. In spoken German, innerhalb von + Dative is very common (e.g., innerhalb von zwei Stunden).

Examples (5)

  1. Das Parken außerhalb der markierten Flächen ist verboten.

Parking outside of the marked areas is forbidden.

Word by Word: The parking outside the marked areas is forbidden.

Here, 'außerhalb' is used spatially with the feminine plural genitive 'der markierten Flächen'.

  2. Bitte bezahlen Sie die Rechnung innerhalb eines Monats.

Please pay the invoice within one month.

Word by Word: Please pay you the invoice within a month.

'Innerhalb' is used temporally here. 'Eines Monats' is the masculine genitive form.

  3. Wir wohnen etwas außerhalb.

We live a bit outside (of town).

Word by Word: We live somewhat outside.

'Außerhalb' can also function as an adverb without a following noun.

  4. Innerhalb von zwei Wochen war das Projekt fertig.

Within two weeks, the project was finished.

Word by Word: Within of two weeks was the project finished.

This shows the common 'von + dative' construction used in spoken German or when the genitive is not clearly marked.

  5. Hunde müssen innerhalb des Gebäudes an der Leine geführt werden.

Dogs must be kept on a leash within the building.

Word by Word: Dogs must within the building on the leash led be.

A formal spatial use with the neuter genitive 'des Gebäudes'.

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting the genitive -s ending on masculine or neuter nouns.

    innerhalb des Monat
    innerhalb des Monats

When using the genitive case with masculine or neuter nouns, you must add the -(e)s ending to the noun itself.

  • Confusing 'innerhalb' with 'in' for specific points in time.

Ich komme innerhalb einer Stunde. (meaning: I'll be there in an hour)
    Ich komme in einer Stunde.

'In einer Stunde' means you will arrive at the end of a 60-minute period. 'Innerhalb einer Stunde' means you will arrive at some point during that 60-minute window.

Learn This First

To use 'innerhalb' and 'außerhalb', you must first understand the genitive case system, including how articles change and how masculine/neuter nouns take an -s or -es ending. These prepositions function as part of the larger group of genitive prepositions.
