Unreal Present Conditional
The Unreal Present Conditional (Type 2) describes situations that are not currently true or are unlikely to happen. It uses the würde + infinitive structure or special forms like wäre and hätte.
How It Works
The Unreal Present Conditional consists of two parts: the condition (the 'if' part) and the consequence (the 'then' part).
1. The Wenn-Clause (Condition)
This clause usually starts with wenn (if). The verb moves to the end of the clause. You use the Konjunktiv II form here.
- For most verbs: Use würde + infinitive (e.g., wenn ich gewönne is rare; wenn ich gewinnen würde is standard).
- For high-frequency verbs: Use the synthetic form. This is mandatory for haben (hätte), sein (wäre), and modal verbs (könnte, müsste, sollte).
2. The Main Clause (Consequence)
This describes what would happen. If the wenn-clause comes first, the main clause must start with the verb (the verb-second rule).
3. Word Order Nuance
You can drop the word wenn entirely. If you do, the verb moves to the very front: Hätte ich Zeit... instead of Wenn ich Zeit hätte.... Both mean 'If I had time.'
Examples (5)
- Wenn ich mehr Geld hätte, würde ich eine Weltreise machen.
If I had more money, I would go on a trip around the world.
Word by Word: If I more money had, would I a world-trip make.
This uses 'hätte' (synthetic) for the condition and 'würde machen' (analytical) for the consequence.
- Wenn ich du wäre, würde ich den Job annehmen.
If I were you, I would accept the job.
Word by Word: If I you were, would I the job accept.
This is the standard way to give advice in German using 'wäre'.
- Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?
Could you please help me?
Word by Word: Could you me please help?
The Type 2 conditional is also used for polite requests.
- Hätte ich Zeit, käme ich mit.
If I had time, I would come along.
Word by Word: Had I time, came I with.
This example shows the 'wenn-drop' where the verb 'hätte' moves to the front. 'Käme' is a formal synthetic form of 'kommen'.
- Wenn es nicht regnen würde, könnten wir spazieren gehen.
If it weren't raining, we could go for a walk.
Word by Word: If it not rain would, could we walk go.
Here, 'könnten' is used in the main clause because modal verbs prefer the synthetic form.
Common Mistakes
Using 'würde' with 'haben' or 'sein'.
Wenn ich reich sein würde, würde ich ein Auto kaufen.Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Auto kaufen.Native speakers almost never use 'würde sein' or 'würde haben'. You must use 'wäre' and 'hätte'.
Forgetting the umlaut on Konjunktiv II forms.
Ich hatte gern einen Kaffee.Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.'Ich hatte' means 'I had' (past tense). 'Ich hätte' means 'I would have' (hypothetical/polite). The umlaut is crucial for the meaning.
Incorrect word order in the main clause.
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, ich würde kommen.Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.Because the 'wenn'-clause occupies the first position in the sentence, the verb of the main clause must come immediately after the comma.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn the unreal present conditional (Type 2), you must first understand how to form the Konjunktiv II using both the 'würde' auxiliary and the specific forms of 'haben' and 'sein'. Additionally, since 'wenn' introduces a subordinate clause, you must be comfortable with verb-final word order.
- wäre/hätteWäre and Hätte
The unreal present conditional uses the Konjunktiv II forms of 'sein' and 'haben' as core components of the 'wenn' clause.
Level 3 - würde + Infinitive
The 'würde + infinitive' construction is the standard way to form the main clause in an unreal present conditional sentence.
