Extreme Nominalization Chains
Extreme nominalization chains (Nominalisierungsketten) are a hallmark of advanced academic and bureaucratic German. They involve turning verbs and adjectives into nouns and linking them with genitive attributes and prepositions to create highly dense, objective-sounding text.
How It Works
At Level 6 (C1-level proficiency), you are expected to become proficient in Wissenschaftssprache (scientific language) or Amtsdeutsch (bureaucratic German). The overarching concept here is Nominalstil (nominal style), where actions and clauses are compressed into nouns. A defining feature of this style is the Nominalkette (nominal chain), built using several layers:
1. Deverbal and Adjectival Nouns: Actions and qualities are turned into nouns (e.g., prüfen / to examine becomes die Prüfung / the examination, wirksam / effective becomes die Wirksamkeit / the effectiveness).
2. Komposita (Compound Nouns): Massive compound nouns (e.g., Grundstücksverkehrsgenehmigung / real estate transaction permit) are created to pack information tightly together.
3. Genitivketten (Genitive Chains): The core of a nominal chain is often a cascading sequence of genitive attributes (Noun + Genitive + Genitive), creating a Russian-doll effect of nested meanings. Note that chaining more than two or three genitives is considered poor style; they are often broken up using von + Dative or by forming compound nouns.
4. Linksattribut and Rechtsattribut: Nouns are further expanded to the left (like an extended participle) and right (via prepositional links) (e.g., die von der zuständigen Behörde genehmigten Anträge auf Förderung / the applications for funding approved by the responsible authority).
5. Funktionsverbgefüge (Light Verb Constructions): Because meaning is packed into nouns, the actual verbs are often 'empty' (e.g., eine Entscheidung treffen / to make a decision). These function verb constructions allow nominal style to function as sentences.
6. Prepositional Conversions: Becoming proficient in Nominalstil requires converting conjunctions and infinitive clauses into specific prepositions (e.g., weil / because becomes aufgrund / wegen + Genitive; obwohl / although becomes trotz + Genitive; damit / so that and um...zu / in order to become zwecks + Genitive or zu + Dative). This also heavily involves temporal conversions (e.g., wenn/als / when becomes bei + Dative; nachdem / after becomes nach + Dative; während / while becomes während + Genitive) and conditional conversions (e.g., wenn/falls / if becomes bei + Dative or im Falle + Genitive).
7. Passive and Passive Alternatives: To maintain an objective, impersonal tone, Nominalstil is frequently paired with the passive voice or passive alternatives (e.g., sein ... zu + infinitive, sich lassen + infinitive, -bar and -lich adjectives) to remove the active subject.
While this style provides high precision, it can lead to Substantivitis—an excess of 'zombie nouns'. Proficiency involves knowing when to use these chains for professional weight and when to 'unpack' them into Verbalstil (verbal style) using verbal clauses for clarity.
Examples (5)
- Die Einleitung der Überprüfung der Einhaltung der Vorschriften erfolgt durch die Behörde.
The initiation of the review of the compliance with the regulations is carried out by the authority.
Word by Word: The initiation [of] the review [of] the compliance [of] the regulations occurs through the authority.
A classic bureaucratic chain: four nouns linked by genitives to describe a single administrative action.
- Aufgrund der Feststellung des Vorhandenseins toxischer Inhaltsstoffe wurde die Probe erneut geprüft.
Due to the determination of the presence of toxic ingredients, the sample was re-tested.
Word by Word: Due to the determination [of] the presence [of] toxic ingredients was the sample again tested.
Common in scientific writing, this collapses a 'because' clause into a prepositional phrase using 'aufgrund' and two genitive attributes.
- Die Forderung nach einer Senkung von Steuern zur Entlastung der Bürger stieß auf Kritik.
The demand for a reduction of taxes for the relief of citizens met with criticism.
Word by Word: The demand after a reduction of taxes for-the relief [of] the citizens hit on criticism.
This example demonstrates how prepositional attributes (nach, von, zur) are used alongside genitives to build complex Nominalketten.
- Die vom Ministerium beschlossene Ausweitung der Maßnahmen zur Bekämpfung der Krise wurde begrüßt.
The expansion of measures to combat the crisis, which was decided by the ministry, was welcomed.
Word by Word: The from-the ministry decided expansion [of] the measures for-the combatting [of] the crisis was welcomed.
This sentence integrates an extended participial attribute ('die vom Ministerium beschlossene') into a nominal chain, a hallmark of C2-level complexity.
- Hinsichtlich der Beurteilung der Wirksamkeit der Maßnahmen liegen noch keine Ergebnisse vor.
Regarding the assessment of the effectiveness of the measures, no results are available yet.
Word by Word: Regarding the assessment [of] the effectiveness [of] the measures lie yet no results before.
A three-tier genitive chain used to define the specific scope of a scientific report.
Common Mistakes
Genitive Attrition (dropping the case)
Die Prüfung die Einhaltung die Vorschriften erfolgt bald.Die Prüfung der Einhaltung der Vorschriften erfolgt bald.In long chains, learners often forget to apply the genitive case to every noun in the sequence, reverting to the nominative or accusative by mistake.
Preposition Mismatch
Das Warten der Antwort ist anstrengend.Das Warten auf die Antwort ist anstrengend. If a verb has a fixed preposition (warten auf), you must keep that preposition when nominalizing it, rather than switching to a genitive attribute.
Stylistic Overload
Ich danke dir für die Ermöglichung der Abholung des Pakets.Danke, dass du das Paket für mich abgeholt hast.Using extreme nominalization in casual conversation or informal emails sounds robotic and unnatural. Proficiency involves choosing the right register.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To learn extreme nominalization chains, you must first be comfortable with the 'Nominalstil' (nominal style) common in formal German. You also need a deep understanding of the genitive case, as it is the primary mechanism for linking these long strings of nouns, and a solid grasp of how complex compound nouns are constructed.
- Nominal Style
Extreme nominal chains are an advanced extension of the basic nominal style, requiring a firm grasp of how verbs and adjectives are converted into nouns.
Level 4 - Attributive Genitive Constructions
These chains rely heavily on stacking genitive attributes to link multiple nouns together in a single phrase.
Level 4 - Gender Of Compound Nouns
Understanding how complex nouns are formed and how their gender is determined is essential for managing the agreement within dense nominal structures.
