deshalb/deswegen/daher
Adverbs of Consequence
Use deshalb, darum, deswegen, or daher to show that the second part of a sentence is the result of the first. They all mean 'therefore' or 'that's why'.
How It Works
In German, when you want to express a consequence, you use adverbs of consequence. While they function like 'therefore' in English, their grammatical behavior is strictly German.
1. Meaning & Nuance
- Deshalb: The most common and versatile option used in both speech and writing.
- Darum: Very common in spoken German; it points back to the reason you just gave.
- Deswegen: A very close synonym to deshalb, used frequently in all contexts.
- Daher: More formal and often used in academic or professional writing.
2. Word Order (The V2 Rule)
Because these are adverbs, they occupy a position in the sentence (unlike coordinating conjunctions which sit at Position 0). When they start a clause, the finite verb must come immediately after them.
Structure: [Adverb] + [Verb] + [Subject] ...
3. Flexibility
These adverbs can also appear in the middle of the sentence (the Mittelfeld).
Example: Ich war krank. Ich bin deshalb zu Hause geblieben.
4. Note on Interrogatives
Do not confuse these with weshalb or weswegen. While they look similar, those are question words used in direct questions and for indirect questions.
Examples (4)
- Der Zug hatte Verspätung, deshalb kam ich zu spät.
The train was delayed; therefore, I arrived late.
Word by Word: The train had delay, therefore came I to late.
Notice how 'kam' (the verb) comes immediately after 'deshalb', which occupies Position 1.
- Es regnet heute, darum bleiben wir im Haus.
It is raining today; that's why we are staying in the house.
Word by Word: It rains today, that's why stay we in the house.
'Darum' is very common in everyday speech and points back to the reason in the first part.
- Die Verkaufszahlen sinken; daher müssen wir die Strategie ändern.
Sales figures are sinking; hence, we must change the strategy.
Word by Word: The sales-numbers sink; hence must we the strategy change.
'Daher' provides a more formal tone, suitable for business contexts.
- Ich habe kein Geld. Ich kaufe mir deswegen kein neues Auto.
I have no money. I am therefore not buying a new car.
Word by Word: I have no money. I buy me therefore no new car.
This shows 'deswegen' in the middle of the sentence (Mittelfeld) rather than at the start.
Common Mistakes
Forgetting verb-second inversion.
Deshalb ich bleibe zu Hause.Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause. In German, adverbs at the start of a sentence count as Position 1. The verb must come next (Position 2).
Confusing 'deshalb' with 'weil'.
Ich bleibe zu Hause, deshalb es regnet.Es regnet, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.'Deshalb' introduces the result, whereas weil introduces the reason. You cannot swap them without changing the sentence order.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To use 'deshalb', 'deswegen', and 'daher' correctly, you must understand German sentence structure, specifically how the verb must remain in the second position even when an adverb starts the sentence. It is also helpful to understand the basic logic of cause and effect already established by 'warum' and coordinating conjunctions.
- Verb-Second Word Order
The adverbs 'deshalb', 'deswegen', and 'daher' occupy the first position in a clause, requiring the verb to move to the second position (inversion).
Level 2 - und/oder/aber/dennCoordinating Conjunctions
Understanding how coordinating conjunctions connect main clauses is essential before learning how conjunctive adverbs like 'deshalb' function as connectors.
Level 1 - warumWhy
These adverbs provide the answer to 'warum' (why) questions, establishing the semantic link between cause and consequence.
