grazas / por favor / de nada

Please and Thank You

Level 1

Be polite with por favor (please), grazas or moitas grazas (thank you, thank you very much) and de nada (you are welcome).

How It Works

Please: por favor. Put it at the start or the end of a request: Un café, por favor. (A coffee, please.), Por favor, pode repetir? (Could you repeat that, please?)

Thank you: grazas.

  • grazas: thanks
  • moitas grazas: thank you very much
  • grazas a ti / grazas a vostede: thank you (as a reply)

Because grazas is feminine plural, the word for "many" is feminine too: moitas. See moi vs moito.

Thanks for something. Use por. Before an article, por becomes polo, pola, polos, polas: Grazas polo café. (Thanks for the coffee.), Grazas pola axuda. (Thanks for the help.) See contractions of por.

You are welcome: de nada. The usual reply to grazas. You will also hear non hai de que (don't mention it).

Examples (6)

  1. Moitas grazas!

    Thank you very much!

    Word by Word: Many thanks!

  2. Un café, por favor.

    A coffee, please.

  3. Grazas pola axuda.

    Thanks for the help.

Word by Word: Thanks for-the help.

    Por + a becomes pola.

  4. Grazas! De nada.

    Thanks! You are welcome.

Word by Word: Thanks! Of nothing.

  5. Grazas a ti.

    Thank you. (as a reply)

Word by Word: Thanks to you.

  6. Por favor, pode repetir?

Could you repeat that, please? (formal)

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Spanish gracias.

    Gracias!
    Grazas!

The Galician word is grazas, with z.

  • Using masculine moitos with grazas.

    Moitos grazas!
    Moitas grazas!

Grazas is feminine plural, so the word for "many" is moitas.

  • Not contracting por with the article.

    Grazas por a axuda.
    Grazas pola axuda.

Por and the article always join: por + a = pola, por + o = polo.
