o noso / a nosa / o voso / a vosa

Our and Your: Noso and Voso

Level 1

Say o noso, a nosa, os nosos, as nosas for our, and o voso, a vosa, os vosos, as vosas for your when you talk to a group as vós.

How It Works

The forms.

  • our: o noso piso, a nosa cidade, os nosos fillos, as nosas amigas
  • your (vós): o voso piso, a vosa cidade, os vosos fillos, as vosas amigas

Agree with the thing owned. A nosa casa is feminine because casa is, even if everyone who owns it is a man.

Keep the article. As with the other possessives, the article normally comes first: o noso piso, na vosa casa (in your house).

Voso goes with vós. Galician uses vós as the everyday plural you, and voso is its possessive. When you speak formally to a group as vostedes, use seu and súa: Vostedes poden deixar aquí as súas maletas. See vós and vostedes.

Spelling. The pronouns nós and vós carry an accent, but the possessives noso and voso never do.

Examples (6)

  1. O noso piso é pequeno.

    Our flat is small.

  2. A nosa cidade ten moitos parques.

Our city has a lot of parks.

  3. Os vosos fillos xogan moi ben.

    Your children play very well.

Vosos is for a group you call vós.

  4. Onde está a vosa casa?

    Where is your house?

  5. As nosas amigas chegan hoxe.

    Our friends are arriving today.

  6. Vostedes poden deixar aquí as súas maletas.

You can leave your suitcases here.

With formal vostedes the possessive is súas, not vosas.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing an accent on noso or voso.

    O nóso piso é novo.
    O noso piso é novo.

The pronoun nós has an accent, but the possessive noso does not.

  • Matching the possessive to the owners instead of the thing owned.

    O noso casa é vella.
    A nosa casa é vella.

Casa is feminine, so the possessive is a nosa.

  • Using voso with vostedes.

    Vostedes esqueceron as vosas chaves.
    Vostedes esqueceron as súas chaves.

Vostedes takes third-person forms, so the possessive is seu or súa. Voso goes with vós.
