nunca / xamais / endexamais
Never: Xamais and Endexamais
Nunca is the everyday word for never. Xamais and endexamais mean the same but sound stronger or more literary: Xamais volvín alí (I never went back there).
How It Works
Three words for never
- nunca: the normal word in speech and writing.
- xamais: more emphatic, common in careful writing, songs and speeches.
- endexamais: the strongest and most literary, close to English never ever.
The Galician dictionary lists them as synonyms, so the choice is about tone, not meaning.
Before or after the verb
These words behave like the other negative words:
- Before the verb, the negative word is enough: Xamais volvín alí (I never went back there).
- After the verb, put non in front of the verb: Non volvín xamais alí.
Pronouns. A negative word before the verb pulls an unstressed pronoun in front of the verb, just as non does: Xamais me sentín tan ben (I have never felt so good), not xamais sentinme.
Register. In a chat with friends, nunca is the natural choice. Use xamais or endexamais when you want weight or a literary tone: Endexamais se viu cousa igual (nothing like it was ever seen).
Examples (6)
- Xamais volvín alí.
I never went back there.
The negative word comes before the verb, so no non is needed.
- Endexamais o esquecerei.
I will never ever forget it.
Endexamais before the verb pulls the pronoun o in front of esquecerei.
- Non o esquecerei xamais.
I will never forget it.
When xamais comes after the verb, non goes before the verb.
- Xamais me sentín tan ben coma agora.
I have never felt as good as I do now.
- Endexamais se viu cousa igual.
Nothing like it was ever seen.
A literary, emphatic sentence; in everyday speech you would say Nunca se viu cousa igual.
- Nunca estiven en Roma.
I have never been to Rome.
Nunca is the neutral, everyday choice.
Common Mistakes
Leaving out non when xamais comes after the verb.
Volvín xamais alí.Non volvín xamais alí.After the verb, a negative word needs non in front of the verb. Or put xamais first: Xamais volvín alí.
Putting the pronoun after the verb when xamais comes first.
Xamais esquecereino.Xamais o esquecerei.A negative word before the verb pulls the pronoun in front of the verb.
