por moito que + Subjunctive

However Much: Por Moito Que

Level 5

Por moito que + subjunctive means however much or no matter how much: Por moito que corras, non chegas a tempo (however fast you run, you will not get there on time).

How It Works

No matter how much

This concessive pattern says that even a large amount of something will not change the result. The verb after que is normally in the subjunctive.

  • por moito que / por máis que + verb: Por moito que corras, non chegas a tempo; Por máis que o intente, non me sae.
  • por moi + adjective or adverb + que: Por moi cansa que estea, sempre me axuda. Use moi before an adjective, not moito.
  • por moito/moita/moitos/moitas + noun + que: Por moitos libros que leas, sempre hai algo novo. Here moito agrees with the noun.
  • por pouco que + verb = however little: Por pouco que estudes, aprobarás.

Tense

For the present or future, use the present subjunctive. For the past or for a hypothetical idea, use the imperfect subjunctive: Por moito que o intentase, non conseguía abrir a porta.

Related ways to concede

Aínda que and mesmo que also admit a fact or possibility without changing the result. Por moito que adds the idea of quantity or intensity.
