doutro / nalgún
Contractions with Outro and Algún
De and en join outro and algún: doutro (of another), noutra ocasión (another time), nalgún sitio (somewhere).
How It Works
The forms
Why they can feel optional. In speech you hear the joined sound, and Spanish writes the words apart (de otro), so learners often wonder if both spellings are fine. The Galician norms (NOMIG 2003) and the Real Academia Galega dictionary write these contractions as the standard form. Write noutra ocasión, not en outra ocasión.
When there is no contraction
- With con: con outro, con algún amigo.
- With alguén and algo: de alguén, en algo.
- When the preposition does not belong to the word. In No caso de algún alumno faltar..., de goes with the whole clause algún alumno faltar, not with algún, so the words stay apart. See the personal infinitive.
The same pattern elsewhere. Galician joins de and en with articles (do, no), with un and with demonstratives.
