é ... quen / foi ... onde
Cleft Sentences
To spotlight one part of a sentence, put it between a form of ser and a relative word: É ela quen manda (she is the one in charge), Foi en Lugo onde nos coñecemos (it was in Lugo that we met).
How It Works
How a cleft sentence works
A normal sentence such as Nos coñecemos en Lugo can be split in two to put one part in the spotlight. The highlighted part goes between ser and a relative word:
- Foi en Lugo onde nos coñecemos (it was in Lugo that we met).
Choosing the relative word
- a person: quen, or o que, a que, os que, as que: É ela quen manda; Son eles os que teñen a chave.
- a place: onde: Foi en Lugo onde nos coñecemos.
- a time: cando: Foi onte cando chegaron os resultados.
- a manner: como: Foi así como aprendín a nadar.
Agreement
With a highlighted pronoun, ser agrees with it: Son eu quen paga hoxe, Son eles os que teñen a chave. With o que, a que, os que and as que, the article agrees with the highlighted element. The tense of ser usually matches the event: Foi onte cando chegaron.
The reverse order
You can also start with the relative part: O que me preocupa é o prezo (what worries me is the price). This order is common when the highlighted element is a thing or an idea, as in free relatives.
Other ways to add emphasis
Changing word order also highlights information; see changing word order for emphasis.
