capaz de / contento con
Adjectives with Fixed Prepositions
Some adjectives always take the same preposition: capaz de, contento con, afeccionado a, orgulloso de. Está orgullosa do seu traballo (she is proud of her work).
How It Works
Common adjectives and their prepositions
- capaz de (capable of): Non son capaz de abrir esta porta.
- contento con (happy with): Estamos contentos co piso novo.
- afeccionado a (fond of): É moi afeccionado á pesca. Afeccionado is the recommended form; aficionado is less recommended.
- orgulloso de (proud of): Está orgullosa do seu traballo.
- farto de (fed up with): Estou farto de agardar.
- parecido a (similar to): Es moi parecida á túa nai.
- disposto a (willing to): Está disposta a axudar.
Contractions. The preposition joins the article in the usual way: a + a = á, de + o = do, con + o = co. See a + o = ao, de + o = do and con + o = co.
Before an infinitive or a clause. A preposition is still needed: capaz de facelo. Contento takes con before a noun but de before a verb or a clause: contento de verte (happy to see you), contento de que veñas (happy that you are coming). Dropping the preposition is a common mistake. See keeping de before que.
Verbs have fixed prepositions too: see verbs with fixed prepositions.
