Prolative (-tse)

Level 5

The prolative case (-tse) describes the path or medium through which something happens. It is most common in formal contexts for communication and transportation.

How It Works

The prolative is a 'marginal' case in Finnish, meaning it is not used for every noun but is fossilized in specific words. Despite being formed from a plural stem, it carries a singular meaning (e.g., puhelimitse means 'by phone', not 'by phones').

1. Formation:
It is formed using the plural stem ending in -i-, followed by the suffix -tse. Note that this stem can differ from the stems used in the inessive or plural partitive for certain word types. For example, the word posti has the inessive stem poste- (posteissa), but the prolative uses the -i- stem: postitse.

  • puhelin (phone) → puhelimi- → puhelimitse (by phone)
  • meri (sea) → meri- → meritse (by sea)
  • netti (internet) → neti- → netitse (via the net)

2. Vowel Harmony:
Notably, the suffix -tse does not change based on vowel harmony. It remains -tse even if the word contains back vowels (e.g., maitse).

3. Usage and Register:
The prolative indicates a route or channel rather than a physical tool. For example, you travel meritse (by way of the sea/route) but laivalla (by means of a ship/tool). While primarily used in formal or literary Finnish, it remains semi-productive for modern communication methods like sähköpostitse (by email). In everyday speech, Finns often prefer the postposition kautta (e.g., postin kautta) or the adessive case (puhelimella).

4. Adjective Agreement:
Unlike most Finnish cases, adjectives do not agree with the prolative. If you need to describe the medium, you would typically use a different construction or leave the adjective in the genitive or instructive.

Examples (4)

  1. Saimme tiedon asiasta kirjeitse.

We received information about the matter by letter.

    Word by Word: We-received information matter-about letter-by-way-of.

'Kirjeitse' indicates the medium of communication (a letter).

  2. Paketti toimitetaan lentoteitse.

The package will be delivered by air.

Word by Word: Package will-be-delivered air-route-by-way-of.

'Lentoteitse' (lento + tie + tse) specifies the route of transportation.

  3. Hän otti yhteyttä sähköpostitse.

He/she got in touch via email.

Word by Word: He/she took contact email-by-way-of.

'Sähköpostitse' is one of the most common modern uses of the prolative.

  4. Matkustimme Tukholmaan meritse.

We traveled to Stockholm by sea.

    Word by Word: We-traveled Stockholm-to sea-by-way-of.

'Meritse' indicates the geographical route taken.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the singular stem instead of the plural stem.

    Ota yhteyttä puhelintse.
    Ota yhteyttä puhelimitse.

The prolative suffix -tse must be attached to the plural stem (puhelimi-), not the singular or nominative stem.

  • Adding a genitive -n at the end of the suffix.

    Lähetin sen postitsen.
    Lähetin sen postitse.

Learners sometimes confuse the prolative with the instructive or genitive cases; the suffix is simply -tse.
