How (Miten)

Level 1

Miten is the Finnish word for 'how' when you want to know the way something is done or the manner in which someone is feeling.

How It Works

The word miten is one of the most common question words in Finnish. It is used in five main ways:

  • Asking about method: Use it when you want to know the process or steps to do something (e.g., 'Miten menet töihin?' - 'How do you go to work?'). A transport question can be answered with the adessive, for example, 'Bussilla' (By bus); a question about a process may need a whole sentence. A common direct synonym here is millä tavalla (in what way).
  • Asking about manner: Use it to ask about someone's state or the quality of an action (e.g., 'Miten voit?' - 'How are you?'). To say that you are doing well, answer Hyvin, not the bare adjective Hyvä. Other answers can be longer phrases or sentences.
  • Asking about degree or quantity: Use 'miten' with adjectives and adverbs to ask about degree (e.g., 'Miten vanha sinä olet?' - 'How old are you?', 'Miten kauan?' - 'How long?').
  • Exclamations: Use it to emphasize a quality or feeling. The following adjective is in the partitive case for abstract or impersonal exclamations (e.g., 'Miten kaunista!' - 'How beautiful!'), but in the nominative case if it describes a specific, countable subject (e.g., 'Miten kaunis hän on!' - 'How beautiful she is!').
  • Linking clauses: It acts as a conjunction to start indirect questions (e.g., 'En tiedä, miten se toimii' - 'I don't know how it works'). According to standard Finnish punctuation rules, the comma is omitted when the subordinate clause is reduced to a single question word (e.g., 'En tiedä miten').

Important Note: English speakers often fall into the 'How do you feel?' trap. The usual Finnish question about how someone feels is Miltä sinusta tuntuu?, with the ablative miltä. Learn this whole expression rather than translating each English word separately.

Miten is an interrogative adverb. Both miten and kuinka are standard in degree questions such as Miten/Kuinka vanha olet? You may also hear the spoken variation mitenkä, and the common idiom Miten niin? (How so? / Why?).

Everyday Expressions
Miten menee? means “How is it going?” Miten olisi kahvi? suggests “How about a coffee?” For the means of transport specifically, ask Millä menet töihin? (What do you take to work?), answered, for example, Bussilla (By bus).

Examples (6)

  1. Miten sinä voit?

    How are you (feeling)?

Word by Word: How you can/feel?

This is a standard way to ask about someone's well-being or health.

  2. Miten tämä kone toimii?

    How does this machine work?

Word by Word: How this machine works?

Here, 'miten' asks for the method or mechanism of the machine.

  3. Miten se kirjoitetaan?

    How is it written?

Word by Word: How it is-written?

A very useful phrase for learners asking for the spelling of a word.

  4. Miten kaunista!

    How beautiful!

    Word by Word: How beautiful!

In exclamations, 'miten' emphasizes a quality. The adjective is partitive here because the exclamation is abstract/impersonal. For specific countable subjects, use the nominative (e.g., 'Miten kaunis hän on!').

  5. En tiedä, miten tämä tehdään.

I don't know how this is done.

Word by Word: Not I-know, how this is-done.

'Miten' works the same way in indirect questions as it does in direct ones. A comma is generally required before 'miten', but it is omitted specifically when the subordinate clause is reduced to just the question word (e.g., 'En tiedä miten').

  6. Miten niin?

    How so? / Why?

    Word by Word: How so?

An essential idiom used to ask for clarification or to question someone's statement.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing a question about method with a question about reason.

    Different MeaningMiksi tämä kone toimii?
    Miten tämä kone toimii?

Miksi asks why; miten asks how. Both miten vanha and kuinka vanha are valid ways to ask about age.

  • Answering a 'miten' manner question with an adjective instead of an adverb.

    - Miten laulat? - Hyvä.
    - Miten laulat? - Hyvin.

When 'miten' asks about the manner of an action, use the adverb 'hyvin' (well) rather than the adjective 'hyvä' (good) to describe the quality of singing. Other questions can take phrases or whole sentences as answers.

  • Omitting the comma before a full indirect question.

    En tiedä miten tämä toimii.
    En tiedä, miten tämä toimii.

Separate the main clause from a full indirect question with a comma. A question word alone does not require it: En tiedä miten.
