eiköhän / eikös

Hedged Agreement (Eiköhän)

Level 5

eiköhän = 'I suppose,' 'surely,' or 'why don't we' (optimistic/hedged).
eikös = 'didn't/isn't it?' (seeking confirmation).

How It Works

These two particles are essential for sounding natural in Finnish conversation. They allow you to express confidence or make suggestions without being overly blunt.

1. eiköhän (Hedged Assertion/Suggestion)
This is used when you are fairly sure of something (70-90% confidence) or want to make a polite suggestion. It often translates to 'I suppose' or 'surely.'

  • Eiköhän se järjesty. (I'm sure it'll work out.)
  • Enköhän minä pärjää. (I suppose I'll manage.)

The 'Wrap-up' Function: A very common use of eiköhän is to signal that an activity or discussion should end. It suggests a consensus to move on.

  • Eiköhän tämä riitä tältä päivältä. (I suppose this is enough for today / Let's wrap this up.)
  • Eiköhän lähdetä jo. (Shall we get going then?)

2. eikös (Confirmation Seeker)
This is a more colloquial version of eikö niin. Use it when you believe you are right and want the listener to agree. In speech, it is very frequently paired with the -kin clitic on the following word to emphasize the shared expectation.

  • Eikös meillä ollut tapaaminen? (Didn't we have a meeting? - implying 'I'm sure we did.')
  • Eikös olekin kaunis päivä? (Isn't it a beautiful day? - seeking confirmation of a quality.)

3. Morphology
Because these start with the negative verb, you must change the beginning based on the subject:

  • enköhän / enkös (1st sg)
  • etköhän / etkös (2nd sg)
  • eiköhän / eikös (3rd sg)
  • emmeköhän / emmekös (1st pl)
  • etteköhän / ettekös (2nd pl)
  • eivätköhän / eivätkös (3rd pl)

Examples (5)

  1. Eiköhän mennä jo kotiin?

Why don't we go home already? / I suppose we should go home now.

    Word by Word: Not-question-hän we-go already home-to?

Here, 'eiköhän' turns a statement into a polite, optimistic suggestion for the group.

  2. Enköhän minä löydä perille ilman karttaa.

I suppose I'll find my way there without a map.

    Word by Word: Not-I-question-hän I find to-destination without map-partitive.

Notice the inflection 'enköhän' to match 'minä'. It expresses confident probability.

  3. Eikös se ollutkin hieno elokuva?

Wasn't it a great movie? (Seeking agreement)

Word by Word: Not-it-question-s it was-too fine movie?

'Eikös' is used here because the speaker expects the listener to agree that the movie was good.

  4. Eivätköhän he saavu pian.

I'm sure they will arrive soon.

Word by Word: Not-they-question-hän they arrive soon.

The 3rd person plural form 'eivätköhän' shows the speaker's optimistic expectation.

  5. Etkös sinä sanonut tulevasi?

Didn't you say you were coming?

Word by Word: Not-you-question-s you said coming-your?

'Etkös' is used to confirm a previous statement made by the listener.

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'eiköhän' as an invariant particle for all persons.

    Eiköhän minä tule huomenna.
    Enköhän minä tule huomenna.

Because the base is the negative verb 'ei', it must inflect to 'en' for the first person.

  • Confusing 'eiköhän' with 'ehkä' (maybe).

    Eiköhän sataa, en tiedä.
    Ehkä sataa, en tiedä.

'Eiköhän' implies a strong hunch or optimism. If you genuinely have no idea, use 'ehkä'.
