ko / mo
Short Genitive Pronoun Priority
In Filipino, the order of pronouns is determined by their length. The one-syllable pronouns ko (I/my), mo (you/your), and ka (you) take priority and appear first in the pronoun cluster.
How It Works
This rule is a fundamental part of Filipino word order. Unlike English, Filipino organizes its small 'leaning' words (enclitics) by sound and length.
1. The Syllable Rule:
The pronouns ko, mo, and ka are only one syllable. Most other pronouns, like siya or nila, are two syllables. Therefore, the monosyllabic pronouns will almost always jump to the front of the pronoun group.
2. The Standard Hierarchy:
When multiple enclitics appear together, they generally follow this order: Monosyllabic Pronouns (ko, mo, ka) > Enclitic Particles (like ba, na, or pa) > Bisyllabic Pronouns (like niya or nila). Note that sa-form pronouns like akin or kaniya are not enclitics and do not follow this specific movement rule.
3. The 'Kita' Exception:
There is one special case: when the pronouns ko (I) and ka (you) are used together, they merge into the portmanteau kita. For example, instead of saying 'Mahal ko ka,' you must say 'Mahal kita' (I love you).
Examples (5)
- Nakita ko siya.
I saw him/her.
Word by Word: Saw I him/her.
'ko' (1 syllable) comes before 'siya' (2 syllables).
- Tinawagan mo ba sila?
Did you call them?
Word by Word: Called you [question] them?
'mo' (1 syllable) precedes the particle 'ba' and the 2-syllable pronoun 'sila'.
- Hindi mo ako narinig.
You didn't hear me.
Word by Word: Not you me heard.
Even with negation, 'mo' (1 syllable) stays before 'ako' (2 syllables).
- Ibinigay ko ito sa kaniya.
I gave this to him/her.
Word by Word: Gave I this to him/her.
'ko' (1 syllable) comes before the demonstrative 'ito' (2 syllables).
- Mahal kita.
I love you.
Word by Word: Love [I-you].
Note: 'ko' and 'ka' never appear together; they merge into the special form 'kita'.
Common Mistakes
Placing the two-syllable pronoun before the one-syllable pronoun.
Nakita siya ko.Nakita ko siya.Learners often follow English logic (Subject last in this focus), but Filipino requires the shorter pronoun 'ko' to come first.
Putting question particles before the short pronoun.
Nakita ba mo siya?Nakita mo ba siya? While both 'mo' and 'ba' are one syllable, the pronoun 'mo' typically takes precedence in the enclitic cluster.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To understand why 'ko' and 'mo' take priority in sentence placement, you first need to understand the general 'second-position' rule for enclitics and be able to recognize the different forms of Filipino pronouns.
