diumano'y / daw/raw
Formal and Conversational Hearsay
Both markers indicate hearsay ('they say' or 'allegedly'). Daw/Raw is the conversational standard, while diumano (or umano) is reserved for formal news reporting and legal contexts.
How It Works
Filipino distinguishes between casual hearsay and formal allegations through two distinct systems:
1. Conversational: daw / raw
These are enclitic particles that follow the first word of a phrase. They are used in daily life to report what someone else said or general rumors.
- Raw: Used after vowels or the semi-vowels w and y (e.g., Okey raw).
- Daw: Used after consonants (e.g., Mainit daw).
- The 'R' Exception: If the word before the particle ends in a vowel but contains the letter 'r' in the final or penultimate syllable, use daw instead of raw to avoid cacophony (e.g., Maaari daw, Pari daw).
2. Formal/Journalistic: diumano / umano
These are used by news anchors and journalists to distance themselves from a claim. They translate to 'allegedly' or 'reportedly.'
- Diumano'y: Often appears at the start of a sentence and usually takes the enclitic form of the inversion marker ay ('y) to connect to the predicate.
- Umano: More flexible in position, often appearing after the verb in news reports (e.g., Arestado umano...).
Register Nuance: Using diumano in a casual text message sounds like you are pretending to be a news reporter, while using only daw in a formal legal report might sound insufficiently professional.
Examples (6)
- Pupunta raw siya sa party mamaya.
They say she is going to the party later.
Word by Word: Will-go they-say she to-the party later.
Uses the conversational 'raw' because the preceding word 'pupunta' ends in a vowel.
- Diumano'y sangkot ang suspek sa nakawan.
The suspect is allegedly involved in the robbery.
Word by Word: Allegedly-is involved the suspect in-the robbery.
Uses the formal 'diumano'y' at the start of the sentence, where 'y is the inversion marker ay.
- Maaari daw magbago ang panahon.
They say the weather might change.
Word by Word: Possible they-say to-change the weather.
Uses 'daw' despite the preceding vowel because 'maaari' contains the letter 'r', following the rule to avoid repetitive 'r' sounds.
- Tumakas umano ang bilanggo kagabi.
The prisoner reportedly escaped last night.
Word by Word: Escaped reportedly the prisoner last-night.
Uses 'umano' as a formal reportative marker placed after the verb.
- Mabait daw ang bagong guro.
They say the new teacher is kind.
Word by Word: Kind they-say the new teacher.
Uses 'daw' because 'mabait' ends in a consonant (t).
- Pari daw ang pinsan niya.
They say his cousin is a priest.
Word by Word: Priest they-say the cousin his.
Uses 'daw' instead of 'raw' because the word 'pari' contains an 'r', which triggers the phonetic exception.
Common Mistakes
Using 'diumano' in casual conversation with friends.
Gutom diumano ako.Gutom daw ako sabi ni Nanay.'Diumano' is strictly for formal or journalistic contexts. Using it casually sounds unnaturally stiff or like a joke.
Ignoring the D/R rule after vowels.
Sabi daw niya...Sabi raw niya...While 'daw' is sometimes heard in fast speech, 'raw' is the correct form following a vowel like the 'i' in 'sabi'.
Misidentifying the 'y in diumano'y as a linker.
Diumano na sangkot siya...Diumano'y sangkot siya...In formal writing, 'diumano' often uses the enclitic form of the inversion marker ay (shortened to 'y) to connect to the predicate, not the linker na/-ng.

Level 2 - di umanoAllegedly
The formal variant often used at the beginning of sentences.
Level 6 - umanoReportedly / Allegedly
A formal hearsay marker often used internally within a sentence.
Level 6 - Second-Position Words

Foundations - Register Choice
Provides context on when to choose journalistic markers over casual ones.
Level 5 - ayon kay / ayon saAccording to a Person or Source
Used to cite the specific source of the hearsay (e.g., 'According to...').
