kaudu / abil / järgi
Via, By Means of, According to
Tartu kaudu means via Tartu, sõnaraamatu abil with the help of a dictionary, and retsepti järgi following a recipe.
How It Works
All three words come after a noun in the genitive:
- kaudu – via, through: a route or a go-between. Me sõitsime Võrru Tartu kaudu. Sain selle töö sõbra kaudu. Pileti saab osta interneti kaudu.
- abil – with the help of, by means of: usually a tool or method. Tõlkisin teksti sõnaraamatu abil. With a person, abiga is common: sõbra abiga.
- järgi – according to, by, following: a rule, source or model. Tegin koogi retsepti järgi. Kohaliku aja järgi on kell kümme. Lõhna järgi otsustades ... (judging by the smell ...)
A plain comitative can often replace abil: sõnaraamatuga. abil sounds a little more formal.
Another meaning of järgi. With the allative and a verb like minema, järgi or järele means going to fetch someone: Lähen lapsele järele. (I am going to pick up my child.) With jõudma, it means catching up: Me jõuame talle varsti järele.

Leaving the noun in the nominative.

Using the elative before kaudu.
