Negative Impersonal

Level 3

Siin suitsetatakse means "People smoke here." The negative is Siin ei suitsetata: "No smoking here."

How It Works

The impersonal says that people in general do something, without naming who. In the negative, the ending -takse/-dakse is not used. Instead you use ei plus a short form ending in -ta or -da.

Handy rule: take the -tud form and change -tud → -ta or -dud → -da.

  • räägitakse (räägitud) → ei räägita
  • suitsetatakse (suitsetatud) → ei suitsetata
  • tehakse (tehtud) → ei tehta
  • öeldakse (öeldud) → ei öelda
  • süüakse (söödud) → ei sööda
  • ollakse (oldud) → ei olda; minnakse (mindud) → ei minda

The rule helps most with verbs like tegema and sööma, whose positive forms tehakse and süüakse look different.

Signs and rules often use this form: Siin ei suitsetata. (No smoking here.) Pühapäeval ei töötata. (People don't work on Sunday.)

As in every negative sentence, the object goes into the partitive: Siin ei müüda alkoholi. The past negative is simply ei plus the -tud form: Seal ei räägitud eesti keelt. (Estonian wasn't spoken there.)

Examples (6)

  1. Siin ei suitsetata.

    No smoking here.

Word by Word: here not is-smoked

  2. Seda ei öelda nii.

That's not how you say it.

    öeldud → ei öelda.

  3. Pühapäeval ei töötata.

    People don't work on Sunday.

  4. Seda sõna enam ei kasutata.

That word is no longer used.

  5. Selles peres ei sööda liha.

Meat isn't eaten in this family.

söödud → ei sööda, even though the positive is süüakse.

  6. Kõike ei tehta raha pärast.

Not everything is done for money.

    tehtud → ei tehta.

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping the -takse ending after ei.

    Siin ei suitsetatakse.
    Siin ei suitsetata.

After ei, the impersonal loses -kse and ends in -ta or -da.

  • Building the negative from tehakse.

    Seda ei tehakse nii.
    Seda ei tehta nii.

Tegema has the irregular positive tehakse. Use the -tud form, tehtud, to get ei tehta.

  • Leaving the object in the nominative.

    Siin ei müüda alkohol.
    Siin ei müüda alkoholi.

In a negative sentence, the object is always in the partitive.
