Language Names
A language is a small-letter word plus keel (language): eesti keel (Estonian). Ma räägin eesti keelt. (I speak Estonian.)
How It Works
Naming languages
The first word comes from the name of a country or people, and it is written with a small letter: eesti keel, inglise keel, vene keel, soome keel, saksa keel, prantsuse keel, hispaania keel, jaapani keel, hiina keel. See Small Letters for Days and Nations.
Only keel changes
- Eesti keel on ilus. The subject keel is nominative. Eesti has a capital here only because it starts the sentence.
- Ma räägin eesti keelt. The partitive keelt follows rääkima, õppima and oskama.
- Mis see on eesti keeles? The inessive keeles means in a language.
- Tõlgi see eesti keelde. The short illative keelde means into a language (see Short Illative).
- Ma saan inglise keelest aru. The elative keelest follows aru saama (to understand).
Two languages at once. Say keel only once, at the end: Ma räägin eesti ja inglise keelt.
People and languages. A person is an eestlane (an Estonian), but the language is eesti keel; see Nationality Words. Something written in a language uses the one-word adjective -keelne: eestikeelne raamat (a book in Estonian).
