kui ... siis

If ..., Then (Kui ... Siis)

Level 2

Kui sul on aega, siis tule meile. means If you have time, (then) come over.

How It Works

1. The pattern
Kui + condition, siis + result

  • Kui sajab, siis jään koju. (If it rains, then I'll stay home.)
  • Kui sa oled väsinud, siis puhka natuke. (If you're tired, rest a little.)
  • Kui ta helistab, siis ütle, et ma olen tööl. (If he calls, tell him I'm at work.)

2. With time
siis also follows a when clause: Kui ma olin väike, siis kartsin koeri. (When I was little, I was afraid of dogs.)

3. Word order after siis
The verb usually comes right after siis: siis jään koju. A pronoun subject can also come first: siis ma jään koju. Both are natural in speech.

4. Only when kui comes first
siis as then belongs after a kui clause that comes first. When the kui clause comes second, the sentence simply ends with it: Tule meile, kui sul on aega. You may also see siis right before kui in a different sense, at the time when: Tule siis, kui sul on aega.

5. siis, not seejärel
For the then of a condition, use siis. seejärel (after that) only puts events in order and does not fit here. siis can also mean then in a sequence: Sõime ja siis läksime välja. (We ate and then went out.)

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the comma before siis.

Kui sul on aega siis tule meile.
Kui sul on aega, siis tule meile.

The kui clause ends with a comma, and siis comes after it.

  • Using seejärel for the then of a condition.

Kui sul on aega, seejärel tule meile.
Kui sul on aega, siis tule meile.

seejärel means after that, in a sequence of events. The then of a condition is siis.
