mul on külm
Feeling Cold, Hungry or Bored
Mul on külm means I am cold, literally "at me is cold". The person who feels it goes into the adessive.
How It Works
Put the person who feels something in the adessive, then on, then the word for the feeling. The verb is always on, whoever feels it: mul on, sul on, tal on, meil on, teil on, neil on.
- Mul on külm. – I am cold.
- Mul on palav. – I am hot.
- Mul on igav. – I am bored.
- Mul on kõht tühi. – I am hungry. (literally: my stomach is empty)
- Mul on janu. – I am thirsty.
- Mul on hea meel. – I am glad.
- Mul on kahju. – I am sorry.
- Mul on kiire. – I am in a hurry.
- Mul on valus. – It hurts.
- Mul on halb. – I feel sick.
Other people: Lapsel on palav. (The child is hot.) Kas sul on külm? (Are you cold?)
Negative and past: Mul ei ole igav. or Mul pole igav. Mul oli külm.
Starting to feel: use hakkama: Mul hakkas külm. (I started to feel cold.)
Why not ma olen? With olema, the word describes the person: Ma olen igav means "I am boring", and Ma olen külm means that you are cold to the touch or unfriendly. Some adjectives do describe a feeling with olema, such as Ma olen näljane (I am hungry), so learn each expression as a whole.
